Grief of X

Medium: Clip Studio Paint

Grief of X is a Fan-Art series using various X-Men and their abilities to display different aspects and levels of grief.  It’s a personal project as I navigate through the grief of losing my mother by using a franchise I hold dear to life.

My goal is to take what makes those characters unique to convey how they would feel during some type of loss.  For example, “der Kummer (the Heartache)” is of a very scared and visibly hurt Nightcrawler; so hurt, that Kurt Wagner clutches his rosary while tears are falling from his eyes.  The tears reflect that magenta hue of his “bamf” teleportation mutant ability; I even have them “skipping” to a part of the end of his tail.  However, is Nightcrawler crying because of the hurt that was inflicted upon him? Or is he crying because of the evil that exists that inflicted such damage? Is Kurt crying because of the same hurt inflicted on others because of their genetic differences? So much can be taken from this piece and I think it might be a very personal one for many people experiencing the hurt from some type of loss.

Rather than “digital paint” comic book related material using my regular technique of line art + digital painting/rendering (and LOTS of layers), I instead painted on one layer at the least and about 5 layers at most.  I wanted to create some digital paintings using my traditional methods when painting on a canvas.  There are no “layers” to discard and no “undo” or eraser tools when traditionally using paints.  Therefore, using this technique with technology challenges me to try a different way of creating digital art.
