Battle Cries

Medium: Acrylic on Canvas
Size: 28 x 36 Inches
Date: Spring 2005

Battle Cries targets how children are affected by the world that we as adults have created around them. The child is dressed in oversized military clothing standing on top of skulls. Written on the skulls are words like, "drugs, violence, molestation, and war." Above him, I have written backwards in a child-like format, "On the rise are the battle cries; the children will rebel." I chose to use crayons to write it to keep with a child-like, but gritty theme.

Four Little Girls

Medium: Charcoal Pencil on Newsprint
Size: 9 x 40 Inches
Date: Fall 2004

Four Little Girls was inspired by the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963. I purposely used cheap newsprint to give it a feeling as if looking at an old photo of the innocent little girls who were the only casualties of this horrible KKK bombing.

Just wanted to show love to mothers and mothers-to-be. It was done with a technique where you draw on black paper using a white pencil. It is sort of a reversal process, whereas you are rendering the highlights instead of the shadows, in which you do on white paper.
